Acne
What is it
Acne occurs
in several forms such as black heads and whiteheads and can be found all over
the body. It most often effects the face, back, neck and chest. The appearance
of acne varies, but is most easily recognised by numerous raised and inflamed
spots.
Causes
All types of
acne are caused by pores becoming blocked. The blockage is due to an
overproduction of sebum- an oily substance that is secreted from the sebaceous
gland connected to every hair follicle. As a result of this, a spot develops.
Spots under the skin are called whiteheads, and those above the skin and
exposed to the air, blackheads.
Treatment
and prevention
Some cases
of acne can be treated with over-the-counter treatments and products, but more
severe cases may require advice and strong medicated treatments from a
healthcare professional such as a dermatologist to cure the acne.
For those
prone to acne, it’s important to take good care of your skin to stop acne
reappearing or worsening. As well as being aware of products you use on your
skin, it’s important to avoid touching your skin wherever possible as this can
transfer bacteria and contribute to blocked pores.
For more details of
your acne talk to a doctor or pharmacist, or head over to the forum and talk to
others who are also affected. :
